Painting with Words: How Writers Depict Art and Artists

How do you depict one artform (painting, sculpture) in another (writing)? This is a challenge and opportunity taken up by writers from the Classical period to our own time. This course will explore some of the greatest examples of poems and short stories (plus a novel and a play) with visual artists or art at its center. Starting with the myth of Pygmalion falling in love with his own sculpture, we will explore different approaches to visual art taken by writers like Honoré de Balzac, Oscar Wilde, Robert Browning, William Carlos Williams, Margaret Atwood and Yasmina Reza. Whenever possible, we will also examine the works of art that inspired literature.
